| World War II Oral History web site (I'm assuming that Richard
and Lillian must be connected somehow to my Arcadia-based family tree)
Description of D Company, 712th Tank Battalion: "The No. 2 assault gun's
loader, Pfc. Richard Howell, who the day before had mailed three postdated
letters to his wife, Lillian, in Arcadia, Louisiana, was still inside the
burning tank."

| Tucker & Melvin Genealogy (with Howell connections). Interesting
web site with very similar names -- Casper "Nail" Howell born on the same
birthdate that I show: 20 Sep 1816. Parents: Nathaniel Howell Jr. and Elizabeth
Wagnon. His grandparents would be Nathaniel Howell Sr, and Ann Nail (Which
explains Casper's possible middle name of "Nail). This web site shows Casper
married to Elizabeth Ann HALL on 2 Nov 1837 (a date confirmed by researcher
Elaine Jackson). Could Hall be a confused version of Howell? Or was she
married before at such a young age?

| Posting of Martha Bridger Gates to RootsWeb: "Casper Neal HOWELL,
b 1816, GA, marr. Elizabeth SCOTT, 1837 Ga. Who were her parents? Her siblings:
George H., Martha Ann, Mary T. Martha Ann married J. Edmond JACKSON 1845
GA."

| Jess Scott Genealogy. Possible link: Henry W. Scott (1815-1886)
had a sister Elizabeth Ann Scott. But her birthdate shown as May 22, 1820
rather than my date of Feb. 22. If same lineage, then parents would
be William P. Scott (1786-1848) and Catharine Ament (1791-1841) of Kentucky.
This seems to be false lead given the Georgia connections and sibling names
indicated by Martha Bridger Gates above.

connection with the town.

| "Civilian Reaction to the Red River Campaign, 1864: From Natchitoches
to Mansfield, Louisana." Wonderful article by Vicki Betts. Mention a brave
Howell female: "Twenty-eight year old Martha Howell Lord emerged from a
cave in the Dollette Hills where she had hidden her children, and she and
her nine year old son William rode horseback to the battlefield.
They discovered the body of her husband, Seth Lord, also of the Crescent
Regiment, recognizable only by the socks she had made for him. She
returned home, hitched up her wagon, drove it back herself, retrieved her
husband's body and took it to Grove Hill Cemetery for burial. To
add to her troubles, when she got home, she found that 'Union troops had
destroyed everything; bedding, carried off all meat, syrup and lard; all
chickens but one blue hen that was on a nest in an ash barrel.' A
federal straggler appeared at her house and asked for a drink of water
from the well. When she told him that she had no cups or vessels
of any kind to offer him, he became angry and shot her puppy which was
near her at the time."
